Valuing Hard Work
& Giving Back
At Rabun Gap, we value hard work and giving back to our community through service to others.
Our community is founded on service. Whether it’s collecting donations for food distribution, singing carols at the local nursing homes, or simply completing chores in the dorms each night, our students put service in action.

Service Above Self
Rabun Gap students show their support through aiding others across the valley to around the world. For our students, service happens in many ways, including through our Upper School Community Service Club, campus-wide service days, student-driven initiatives, or afternoon and weekend activities. We also participate in an annual day of service across all three divisions.

Examples of Service Activities
- Distributing food to needy families through the regional food bank
- Serving food at local and regional soup kitchens
- Helping cats and dogs become people friendly at the local animal shelter
- Assisting with conservation groups as well as state parks and the U. S. Forest Service
- Volunteering for on-campus peer tutoring programs
- Visiting with nursing home residents
- Raising money and collecting essential goods for disaster relief organizations
- Hosting supply drives for a local children’s home
- Assisting with community events
Spotlight on Stewardship
Since our founding in the early 1900s, environmental stewardship has been part of the academic agenda, and, for generations, students contributed practically to the 1,400-acre working farm school. Today, students in our Environmental Stewardship Program, in tandem with our science department, work closely to take care of our beautiful campus.
From composting cafeteria waste to use in school gardens to identifying and reducing the School’s carbon footprint through a range of alternative energy sources, Rabun Gap students in our ESP after school activity gain practical experience and scientific knowledge through a variety of sustainability projects. This group runs the on-campus recycling program and takes care of our campus orchards and bee hives.
We also have students involved in environmental research as a part of their academic curriculum. Past projects have included studying the effects of pesticides on bees and analyzing water quality in the watershed.
