Rabun Gap won an exciting game on the road Friday at Asheville School in overtime. The Eagles missed two field goals after their first two drives and trailed 7-0 after the first quarter. Following an intereption by Devyn Munroe, the Eagles marched down inside the Blues five yard line. Viljami Rautavirta scored on a four yard run up the middle to tie the game 7-7 at the half.
The Blues stuck twice in the third quarter to take a 21-7 lead. Rabun Gap appeared to be headed to their fifth consecutive loss until Kevin Miller took the ensuing kickoff 85 yards to make the score 21-14. Garrison Melzer intercepted another Asheville School pass and returned it 31 yards to the Blues' 29 yard line. Melzer then took it in from 5 yards out to tie the game 21-21 with just over 7 minutes left. Neither team could get close enough to score during the final minutes, so it forced overtime.
The Eagles won the toss and selected to play defense. Asheville School scored in two plays, kicked the PAT, and led 28-21. After Melzer gained nothing around the left end, Glenn Pearce took it in from 10 yards out to make the score 28-27. The Eagles trotted their PAT team out but decided to take a timeout. The offense came back on the field to go for two. Pearce took it off tackle and fought his way into the end zone to end the game.
The 29-28 win gives Rabun Gap an overall record of 2-4. Pearce ran for 112 yards and one TD. The Eagles rushed for 272 yards on the day. Munroe finished with two interceptions from his safety position on the defensive side. Rabun Gap hosts Metrolina Christian on Friday for Parents Weekend; kickoff is at 4:00 PM.
